Thanks to chip tuning, it is possible to increase a little more horsepower from the performance reserves of the engine with relatively little effort. In many cases, however, the increase in engine performance makes it necessary to optimize the braking system. This is where brake specialist Continental Teves comes in: The High Performance Brake Kit is a conversion kit that offers extraordinarily high braking performance, even under the most extreme conditions. One additional positive side effect that we should mention is the high value racing design. This provides an additional argument for car owners who value an enhancement of the vehicle design and, in this way, wish to stand out from the masses. The conversion kit consists of two four-piston fixed calipers with trailing pads, the same number of two-part floating ATE PowerDisc brake discs, flexible steel armed brake hoses and the materials required for assembly. Four-piston fixed calipers with trailing pads The four-piston fixed calipers of the High Performance Brake Kit are made of a high strength aluminum alloy with a hard-coated and painted surface. The unique feature of the fixed calipers of the ATE High Performance Brakes is the arrangement of the brake pads. Depending on where they are supported in the direction of rotation of the brake disc, they are known as either leading or trailing pads. While only leading pads have been used in fixed calipers up to now, ATE, with its High Performance Brake Kit, is the only manufacturer world-wide to offer trailing pads like those which have proven themselves for decades in ATE floating caliper brakes. Advantages of trailing pads include their long service life, thanks to low differential and diagonal wear, no rattling thanks to low pad play, low noise sensitivity and the use of brake cylinders of the same diameter, leading to improved comfort characteristics. The friction material and pad design specially developed for the ATE High Performance Pads show constant friction properties over the whole temperature range (up to 550°C), sufficient even for the demands of motor sports. They are also fitted with high-temperature “plug and play” wear sensors, which indicate when their wear limit has been reached. Brake calipers and pads are supplied in the color “Racing Red“. If 50 kits or more are purchased, the buyer may choose from the caliper colors ATE blue, anthracite, silver and gold. The brake pads are already loaded, making installation considerably easier. Two-part floating PowerDisc with endless Multifunctional Groove The PowerDisc brake discs of the ATE High Performance Brakes are composed of a friction ring and a black mounting bell. Both parts are connected together by means of a floating bolt-sleeve attachment. This connecting technique, successfully tested in motor sports, permits the stress-free expansion of the friction ring under the influence of heat. On the one hand, this increases the durability of the PowerDisc and prevents brake disc distortion while increasing driving comfort under high stress. The endless Multifunctional Groove on the friction ring of the PowerDisc also reduces the sensitivity of the brake to water and reliably channels off gases generated by high temperatures in the brake pad, avoiding to the feared phenomenon of fading. This increases safety when braking, even under the toughest conditions. The Multifunctional Groove also prevents roughness on the friction surface of the brake disc and serves as a visual indication of wear. If the groove is no longer visible, the disc must be replaced (groove depth corresponds with the minimum thickness of the brake disc). Flexible steel brake hoses, fitting parts The flexible steel brake hoses included in the conversion have to be mounted instead of the series brake hoses. They prevent elasticity and thus lead to an improved brake pedal feeling. The adaptation of the four-piston fixed caliper to the vehicle specific axle geometry is carried out by brackets included in the conversion kit. All bolts and fastening parts required are also included. The following replacement parts are available for the High Performance Brake: Brake discs assembled, brake pads with assembly kit, wear sensors, calipers, brackets and brake hoses. For use of the High Performance Brake Kit, wheels of at least 17” in size and ABS are required. As a decision aid for the consumer, dealers receive an installation template, which can be used to help measure the inner rim of the wheel. The ABS function is not affected by installing the High Performance Brake Kit. The conversion is specified in extensive installation instructions from Continental Teves. The initial program covers current models from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen and Volvo. Further models will follow. Continental Teves belongs to Continental AG Hannover and, with its product brand ATE, supplies original equipment and the aftermarket. The Continental Group is a leading supplier of braking systems, suspension components, vehicle electronics, tires and technical elastomers with about 69,000 employees. Annual sales in 2003 amounted to 11.5 billion euros.
