13.12.2005 -Seven rules for the cold season

Sometimes winter comes over night: children look forward to the first snowball fight when they look out the window in the morning and see a blanket of fresh snow - drivers, on the other hand, worry about getting to work. Their cars respond differently than they're used to; the stopping distance increases. The winter season has its own laws, but if you heed seven simple rules, you will arrive safely and comfortably even in ice and snow.

  • Winter tires should be fitted to every car from October to April. Make sure the tread depth is adequate, otherwise adhesion can be lost on snowy or icy surfaces.

  • Particularly in mountainous country, sometimes you're simply lost without snow chains. You should carry them in the trunk to be prepared. Before going on winter vacation, practice fitting the chains so that everything works out right in an emergency.

  • Ensure good vision! Free your windows of ice and snow. A peephole in the windshield will not do. Don't forget to remove the snow from the roof: when you are on the go, snow on the roof quickly turns into a snow slide that impairs your vision. Antifreeze in your windshield wiper system is a must.

  • During the winter the days get shorter. Regular light checks therefore are a must for the dark period of the year. Bulbs usually do not fail from one minute to the next, but gradually lose their illuminating power. And remember to remove snow or dirt from the headlamps too.

  • Check the battery! The car should start even after a cold night.

  • Be ready for an emergency! You should carry warm, wind-resistant clothing with you in the car just as you do a first-aid kit and a hazard warning triangle.

  • Back off the accelerator! A driving style adapted to the conditions will protect you from nasty surprises.
