Diagnostic system needed for repair work

18.09.2006 - A new electric parking brake (EPB) acting on the rear wheels is a standard feature of the Audi A6 and VW Passat. The EPB is very convenient for drivers (for example, there is no brake lever in the interior and there is a hill-start assist function). However, it does make repairing the brakes more complicated.

Electric parking brakes: Diagnostic system needed for repair work
To replace the brake pad or disc, the pistons of the brake caliper need to be retracted electrically. It isĀ  not possible to press the brake caliper pistons back mechanically. If the pistons are forced back, the mechanism inside the caliper will be damaged.

To perform the necessary work on these systems, workshops currently need the diagnostic unit offered by the vehicle manufacturer. This unit allows the pistons to be advanced or retracted. In addition, the brake caliper can be returned to the base position prescribed after completion of any work on the brakes.

During repair work, it is essential to make sure that the (cable) connection between the diagnostic unit and the brake caliper is not interrupted at any time.
