Condition-based service for BMW models

On the BMW 1, 5 and 6 series models, as well as the new 3 series, several tasks have been removed from the normal maintenance schedule based on time and mileage. This work must now be performed separately, which has given rise to a number of calls to the ATE hotline.

So here is a brief explanation: The need for condition-based service (CBS) work is assessed on the basis of the consumption, wear and performance calculated for the vehicle, as well as the inspection intervals laid down by law. CBS means that the work required is determined by the condition of the individual vehicle and not as a general principle for all vehicles.

The instrument cluster (display) on the dashboard indicates which CBS tasks must be performed as the need arises. In the case of BMW, the work concerned may concern:

  1. Engine oil
  2. Diesel particulate filter
  3. Micro filter (coupled with engine oil)
  4. Front brake pads
  5. Rear brake pads
  6. Vehicle check
  7. Spark plugs (coupled with engine oil)
  8. Brake fluid
  9. Vehicle inspection
  10. Exhaust emissions test

In vehicles equipped with the CBS system, only the maintenance work indicated on the display may be performed. It is important to note that each individual CBS job (on the service requirement indicator) needs to be reset separately. A general reset of all the CBS data must not be carried out under any circumstances.

The jobs can be reset and the CBS status can be polled either via the instrument cluster (display) or with a suitable diagnostic unit.
