Already since 1984 the plants of the todays Automotive Systems division were proactively working to develop and implement environmental friendly products and production processes. These activities and approaches are the basis for implementation and certification of all central functions (including Research & Development) and plants to the international Environmental Management System Standard ISO 14001:2004.

An abstract of the history of our environmental activities: 1984 until 1999

1984Replacement of open washing machines by new self contained washing machines, equipped with dikes and extraction systems
1986Substitution of asbestos in brake pads, 5 years prior to legal requirement
1988Start of the first water-emulsion based washing machine
1990Development and implementation of a worldwide internal ESH auditing system
1993Substitution of "wet" final test benches for brake systems to "dry" test benches resulting in complete avoidance of the use of brake fluid
1993Completion of the new Nuremberg plant in consideration of ecological aspects e.g. planting vegetation on the roof, removing of pavement in car-parking areas
1995Nuremberg plant: Receipt of an environmental award "Grün in Grauen Zonen" from the City of Nuremberg
1996Recycling and take-back concept for the spark transformer (with 3 pole output stage) for Volkswagen 
1996Nuremberg plant becomes member of the "Umweltpakt Bayern" (Environmental Pact Bavaria - an initiative of the Federal State of Bavaria to promote environmental management in companies).
1997Nuremberg plant: annual savings of 180 MWh heating energy as a result of heat recovery at an air compressor
1998DfE - Design for Environment - analysis and evaluation of the Anti Lock System MK60 controller
1999Pilot project for implementation of "environmental orientated cost accounting" at Gifhorn plant
1999Development of remediation concepts for contaminated sites in close coordination with responsible authorities (Brazil, Germany, Belgium, France, USA, Great Britain). Start of worldwide clean-up programs.
1999Nuremberg plant: annual savings of 180 MWh electricity as a result of installation of a special cooling system
